Umbrian Villages - Panicale
Life in Panicale. The terrace over Lake Trasimeno
Let's go back to the discovery of our villages. After having explored the province of Terni a bit, talking about Parrano and Ficulle, we point the compass towards the northern province of Perugia and, in particular, towards one of the 27 most beautiful villages in Italy, that Umbria can boast: Panicale
Panicale is a fortified village that has played a fundamental role in the local medieval history, as the first outpost to face for those who wanted to conquer the city of Perugia from the west. The plan of the historic center of Panicale, with its concentric circles, and successive levels of fortification, was in fact one of the most advanced defensive systems of the time.
Panicale also certainly boasts another great quality: one of the best views of Lake Trasimeno.
Where is Panicale located?
In fact, Panicale is located about 6 kilometers from the southern shores of the largest lake in central Italy, on a hill at about 400 m asl, from which the entire valley is dominated, crossed by the Nestore river, which separates it from the sapphire blue water. of the Trasimeno basin.
It will take you about 40 minutes by car to reach Perugia, the regional capital, and just over 20 minutes to reach the A1 motorway. Around the town, along the slopes of the hill and the valley, the countryside and cultivated fields extend as far as the eye can see, which combined with the view of Lake Trasimeno create a unique and unmistakable landscape.
What to do and see in Panicale.
As we have already mentioned previously, Panicale is a particularly important village from a historical point of view. This means that its artistic and architectural treasures are equally so. The fountain in the main square of the town is of particular importance, obtained from an ancient fifteenth-century cistern; the Palazzo del Podestà; in Gothic style, which houses the historical archive of the city with documents dating back to '300; the Teatro Caporali, one of the smallest Umbrian theaters, and the Church of S. Sebastiano, which preserves an extraordinary work inside. Behind the altar of the small church there is in fact the fresco of one of the most important painters of the Italian Renaissance: it is the Martyrdom of St. Sebastian by Pietro Vannucci, known as Perugino.
Whether you are a permanent resident of the town or just a temporary visitor, in Panicale you will find many sporting and cultural activities to fill your days and alleviate the stress of everyday life. Starting with outdoor activities, like trekkingandmountainbiking, with which you can explore the hills surrounding the village and immerse yourself in the typical landscape of Lake Trasimeno.
In summer you can fight the heat at the Tavernelle Water Park, one of the largest in the region, located a stone's throw from the town, with waterslides and heated pools. For the more refined, the area also offers a Golf club, immersed in the woods and vineyards, in the valley that descends from the Panicale hill to the lake.
Not to mention the whole range of activities that can be done in and around the lake, such as canoeing, kitesurfing, Vespa rides, quad rental and much more.
